Clear, actionable emissions reductions
Science Based Targets are measurable greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction goals, set by organisations to align their activities with the objectives of the Paris Agreement. Specifically, these targets are designed to limit global warming to well below 2°C, and ideally to 1.5°C, above pre-industrial levels.
Science Based Targets (SBTs) are important because they provide a clear, credible and measurable pathway for companies to reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. SBTs are broadly respected globally because they are:
Grounded in climate science
Clear and actionable
Validated by independent bodies
Focused on emissions
Organisations can also reduce governance and compliance risk by submitting Science Based Targets. Climate-related disclosure and decarbonisation requirements (like the Australian Accounting Standards AASB S1 and S2) are tightening. SBTs put you ahead of the curve and reduce governance and compliance risk. Setting credible and ambitious targets can also boost commercial performance.
Increasingly, customers of all types are requiring suppliers to have a clear path to reducing carbon emissions. This is especially true if you are part of the supply chain to a Group 1, Group 2 or Group 3 company. You form part of their Scope 3 emissions, which these customers will be required to report on.
