BYRON YOGA CLOTHING IS NOW CARBON NEUTRAL 9 November 2009, Byron Bay
Byron Yoga Clothing has completed a greenhouse gas audit, purchased carbon offsets and has been certified by Coolplanet as carbon neutral.
Based in Byron Bay, Byron Yoga Clothing has been aware of it's environmental footprint for some time. 'In our normal day to day business activities we have been very conscious of environmental impact' owner Dave Price said. 'Already we reduce transport emissions by getting staff to ride bikes to work and for business errands. We also minimise packaging and make sure it is recyclable. Our environmental footprint is already quite small but we wanted to go carbon neutral as it's an extension of our business ethics'.
Areas included in Byron Yoga Clothings greenhouse gas audit were, transport, office electricity, printing, distribution and waste. Coolplanet used government regulated NGACs and solar RECs to offset Byron Yoga Clothings carbon footprint and is proud to certify them as carbon neutral.
EARTH CAR RENTALS BECOMES FIRST CARBON NEUTRAL CAR RENTAL IN AUSTRALIA 5 January 2009, Byron Bay
Earth Car Rentals, has become the first car rental company in Australia to incorporate mandatory carbon offsets on all car rentals and offset the greenhouse gases from its own business operations, effectively making it carbon neutral. The new move comes amid a growing concern for the environment and as a means of reflecting the business’ green credentials. A new pricing scheme which reflects the carbon offsets will come into effect from January 2009, along with details of the carbon abatement projects the surcharge will be spent on.
Earth Car Rentals has employed a Byron-based carbon offsetting and environmental services company, Coolplanet, to abate its carbon emissions who invest in a range of ‘Verified Emissions Reduction’ (VER) projects from government accredited sources. ‘We found Earth Car Rental’s in-house carbon emissions were very low due to their already existing environmental focus, although we identified further low-cost energy saving measures for the business, recommended a range of nationally and internationally sourced carbon credits and have now certified Earth Car Rentals as carbon neutral’ founder of Coolplanet, Daniel Harper, said of the offsetting process.
Carbon credits are units of emissions reductions from carbon abatement projects that can be traded and are equal to one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent prevented from entering the Earth’s atmosphere. Money raised through Earth Car Rentals’ new environmental measures will be spent on independently verified and monitored carbon credits from national and international sources. These carbon abatement projects will be chosen by the merit of their ability to offer permanent, additional and cost effective ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions entering the atmosphere.
‘I think it’s great that we can support the environment as well as local businesses and set a precedent for the new direction that we believe business needs to take - one which values the Earth as well as profits. The beauty of this scheme is that every customer will be collectively contributing towards improving our environment and passing on a message of environmental awareness.’ Earth Car Rental owner, Anna Parker said.
AUSTRALIA'S FIRST CARBON NEUTRAL PLASTICS FACTORY
Effective Tuesday 10 June 2008 Ant Packaging Pty Ltd became Australia’s first Carbon Neutral plastics manufacturer, having calculated their business’ emissions and offsetting them with government certified carbon abatement projects.
At Ant Packaging they recognise there is a perception that plastics manufacturing is considered harmful to the environment. The reality is that plastics are a effective use of a waste product from the energy resource production process that would otherwise be released to harm the ozone layer. However, Ant Packaging acknowledges that they use energy; therefore generating greenhouse gas emissions and thus are a contributor to climate change.
Ant Packaging take their responsibility seriously enough to have done something about it, by commissioning local Byron Bay company Cool Planet to prepare calculations for the carbon emissions associated with their business operations. The results are published under the guidelines of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol which is the most widely used international accounting tool for building credible and effective programs for tackling climate change.
Cool Planet calculated our emissions to include electricity consumption, office supplies, product distribution, plane transport and staff transport at an annual 559 tonnes of GHG.
That total has now been offset by the purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates from Greenpower approved generators and Carbon Offsets from projects accredited by the Australian Government’s Greenhouse Friendly program. The projects involve the design and installation of Photovoltaic Stand Alone Power Supply systems in the Byron Shire and the Regional Resource Recovery Centre in Western Australia which diverts household rubbish from landfill to compost. This project won last year’s Greenhouse Challenge Plus award for outstanding achievement in greenhouse gas abatement.
Ant Packaging will continue to strive to be pro-active in its business practices. Becoming the first carbon neutral plastics factory in Australia is a positive step forward in helping to address the effects our industry has on climate change.
